At WestView Medical Centre in Werribee, our experienced GPs can assess your symptoms, medical history and blood test results to determine whether an iron infusion is appropriate for you.
For eligible patients, our iron infusion service is bulk billed. The prescribed iron medication, such as Ferinject, needs to be purchased by the patient from a local pharmacy before attending the appointment.
How Our Bulk Billed Iron Infusion Service Works
If your GP determines that an iron infusion is appropriate, the process is straightforward:
1. GP Assessment
Your GP will review your symptoms, medical history and blood test results to determine whether an iron infusion is suitable for you.
2. Prescription for Iron
If an iron infusion is recommended, your GP will provide a prescription for the appropriate iron medication.
3. Purchase Your Iron Medication
You will need to take the prescription to your local pharmacy and purchase the prescribed iron medication, such as Ferinject.
4. Attend Your Infusion Appointment
Bring your prescribed iron medication with you when you attend WestView Medical Centre for your infusion.
5. Iron Infusion
Our experienced medical team will administer the iron infusion through a vein in your arm and monitor you during and after the treatment.
6. Bulk Billed Infusion Service
The iron infusion service is bulk billed for eligible patients. The cost of the prescribed iron medication purchased from the pharmacy is separate.

What Is an Iron Infusion?
An iron infusion involves administering iron directly into a vein through an intravenous (IV) infusion. This allows iron to enter the bloodstream directly and replenish the body’s iron stores.
An iron infusion may be considered when oral iron supplements are not suitable, are not well tolerated, have not adequately improved iron levels, or when your GP considers intravenous iron to be appropriate for your individual circumstances.
Who May Need an Iron Infusion?
An iron infusion may be considered for patients who:
- Have confirmed iron deficiency or iron deficiency anaemia
- Cannot tolerate oral iron supplements
- Have not responded adequately to oral iron treatment
- Have difficulty absorbing oral iron
- Require intravenous iron replacement following medical assessment
Not everyone with iron deficiency requires an iron infusion. Your GP will assess your individual circumstances and discuss the most appropriate treatment option with you.
Finding the Cause of Iron Deficiency
Treating iron deficiency involves more than simply replacing iron. It is important to identify the underlying cause, particularly when the reason for low iron levels is unclear or there is evidence of ongoing blood loss.
Depending on your symptoms, medical history and blood test results, your GP may recommend further investigations or referral to a specialist. This may include gastrointestinal assessment or endoscopy where clinically appropriate.
What Happens During an Iron Infusion?
Before your infusion, your GP will review your medical history, symptoms and blood test results.
The prescribed iron medication is administered through a small cannula placed into a vein, usually in your arm. You will be monitored during and after the infusion for any potential reactions.
Your GP or medical team will explain the procedure and advise whether follow-up blood tests or appointments are required.
What Do I Need to Bring?
If you have been prescribed an iron infusion medication such as Ferinject, please:
- Purchase the prescribed medication from your local pharmacy before your appointment
- Bring the medication with you to WestView Medical Centre
- Bring any relevant blood test or pathology results if requested
- Follow any instructions provided by your GP or our practice team
